Hawk Gets 2 Tackles as Jags 'D' blankets KC

Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
The HawkThis past weekend I took the trip to KC to watch the Jaguars face off agains the Chiefs. We got tickets to the game last year, but Brent ended up being hurt and didn't even make the trip. We decided to still go since i never been to Kansas City before.

Luckily the NFL schedule had the Jaguars playing again at Kansas City this year. Once again we got some tickets to KC. We got to the stadium early and watched the teams get ready. We were standing right at the tunnel where the teams were walking out. Brent comes out and we yell at him and he comes over and gives us five and stands around talking to us for quite a bit. We got some really good pictures which i hope will be up soon.

At halftime we met up with Brent's family and talked with his mom and other relatives for awhile. Very nice people. I have only met his mom one time before and she is a very nice lady.

Anyway it seemed like he got a lot of playing time against the Chiefs since they weren't running too much. They ended the game with only 10 yards rushing. Hawk ended the game with 2 tackles and was an inch away from a sack towards the end of the game.

He put pressure on a lot, but the chiefs were running very quick passing plays and not giving them much time at all for sacks.

Homecoming heartbreak: Waterloo beats Jersey 27-17 to nix Homecoming win, bid at winning season in 2007

FootballBy Aaron Ottis

JERSEYVILLE-The Jersey Community High School football team has spent
most of the 2007 season pushing that metaphorical boulder up a hill.
And just when it looks like the boys in blue, through all their labor
on the practice fields, are poised to shove the rock over the apex the
team slips and struggles and slides backwards once again.

Friday night at Snyder Sports Complex was another case of ‘almost’ and
‘could have been’ for the Panthers. With the 27-17 loss to Waterloo,
Jersey is eliminated from the IHSA playoffs, left without a bid for
the Mississippi Valley Conference championship, and will post a losing
record for 2007.

At best, the Panthers can finish 4-5. The squad will need victories in
some very big games to do so, including this week’s match up against
Mascoutah.

Don’t count the team out just yet.

Tennis suffers first loss of season at Triad

TROY-The Jersey Community High School girls tennis team lost its first
match of the season, falling 6-3 to Mississippi Valley Conference
powerhouse Triad on Wednesday.
The Panthers are now on a new type of streak: the losing kind. After
the loss at Triad, Jersey dropped matches to Highland and Granite
City.

In Troy, Danah McCreary beat the Knights’ Kayla Neidecker 6-3, 6-2 at
No. 1. The only other singles win came from Katherine Davis at No. 4.
She defeated Caitlin Lombard 6-4, 6-3 in a lengthy match.
“I think we went into Triad scared because it is Triad,” head coach
Beth Morgan said. “It was just a mind over matter situation, and our
minds didn’t really over compass the matter that particular evening.
It was close. We went into doubles needing to win, and that was some
pressure. It wasn’t impossible to do, though. Everyone is a little
fearful of Triad, and I think we let it get to us.”

The team struggled early, and never seemed to bounce back. Katie
McIver lost 3-6, 1-6 to Jordan Wheeler. Katie Mabery lost 2-6, 6-7 to
Danica Brock. Kelsee Nairn was defeated 2-6, 0-6 by Mari Lewis.
Catherine Hinrichs lost 1-6, 0-6 to Jenna Stevenson.

JERSEYVILLE-The Panthers had a rough time getting shots on goal this
week, and were outscored 11-1 through three matches with Mascoutah,
Carlinville and Highland. Jersey was also out shot 49-10.
The combination of the lack of goals and ineffective defense on three
corner kicks put Jersey on the losing end of a 4-1 score against
Mascoutah.

WOOD RIVER-Sophomore Ethan Bailey shot an 82 over 18 holes at Belk
Park to finish as the Panthers’ best finisher at the Mississippi
Valley Conference golf meet. Kyle Wilson, a junior, carded an 83.
With those scores, the two were able to take eighth and ninth place,
and become All-Conference golfers for 2007.

Bailey went out with the eighth group, playing in the No. 5 position
for Jersey. “I played a lot better than I have the rest of the year,”
Bailey said. “I thought (Belk) was kind of similar to Westlake. I
liked it. It was the easiest 18-hole course that I have played this
year.”

Par for Belk Park is 72 over 18 holes. Bailey had a 44 on the front
nine, then caught fire on the back side. He knocked six strokes of
during the final nine holes and came into the clubhouse with a
two-over-par 38.

Bailey’s total score was 8 strokes behind individual winner Wils Hawn
> (74) of Waterloo.

Second half proves costly for Panthers at Triad

TROY-Triad scored a touchdown in the third quarter, and another in the
fourth to come from behind and defeat the Jersey Panthers 14-7 on
Friday night.

Jerry Jones broke through a big hole created by the Knights’ offensive
line, and scampered 32 yards to the right corner of the end zone to cap
a six minute and 43 second drive that started on Triad’s 17-yard line.
Triad then took the ball with one minute gone in the fourth quarter and
marched 71 yards on 16 consecutive rushes to take the lead, and nearly
all the time off the clock. Quarterback Trevor Durham scored on a
2-yard keeper on fourth-and-goal. The Panthers’ defense was on the
verge of a huge stop after stuffing three rushing attempts, but Durham
finally found a wrinkle in the front line.

The Jersey defense, which had been solid through out the first half,
held a formidable Triad offense to no points through the first two
quarters by putting heavy pressure on Durham and collapsing the rushing
lanes as Jones came to the line.

The loss puts Jersey at 1-4 overall, and 1-1 in Mississippi Valley
Conference play.

The Panthers soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to Riverton in the final
game of the Springfield Lutheran Tournament in Pleasant Plains on
Friday.

“It was the last game of pool play...as we had not accumulated enough
points to advance to the Saturday playoffs, we decided it was a good
chance to take a look at some of the younger kids and get them some
varsity action,” Head coach Marc Patton said. “We played well, but
Riverton scored late to win the game.”

Jersey then traveled to Waterloo on Tuesday and lost 3-0. Waterloo
posted two goals in the first half, but the Jersey defense improved in
the second half and held the Bulldogs to one more goal.

ROXANA-The win streak continued in grand fashion Monday night, as the
Lady Panthers varsity tennis team moved to 8-0 overall with a
convincing 8-1 victory over Roxana.

Jersey won every match except for No. 1 singles, where Danah McCreary
fought back to close the gap to three games during the 10-game pro set
before falling 6-10 to Brooke Tweedy.

“(Tweedy) was good, she was very good,” McCreary said. “I just needed
to get my head into it, rather than getting frustrated.”

Since starting the season at 2-0 in the No. 3 singles spot, the
sophomore has accumulated a 3-3 record at dual matches in the No. 1
spot.

“I have played better now that I am up there,” McCreary said. “I like
it a lot. I am more confident in my skills.”
McCreary/Nairn then won their No. 3 doubles match over Stanley/Martin
10-0.

JERSEYVILLE-The Jersey Community High School varsity cross country
teams are battling through injuries and illness, but the squad still
managed to secure a load of medals Monday afternoon at the 2007 Havens
Invitational Meet at Westlake Country Club.

Jeff Wooldridge and Ryan Todd led the boys to a second place finish
with 58 points. Carlinville won first place with 36 points.

Wooldridge was the individual winner. He broke through the 17-minute
barrier with a 16 minute, 57 second race over the 3.0-mile course. That
is three seconds better than his time for the 2006 Havens Invitational,
and 27 seconds faster than the time that got him to the IHSA Sectional
last year.

Todd had a good race, finishing in 17:21. He took fifth place.
The two utilized teamwork during the second and third miles to pull
away from the crowd and fight the wind.
